Deer Facts: Understanding the World of the Deer

Come Christmas, many of us may choose to add a deer ornament or sculpture to our home or garden to mark the celebration. Christmas has popularized the deer because of the meaning that has been attached to Santa Claus guiding his deer sleigh across the globe. The other part that dawns us is that deer can be very shy. Oftentimes, they are quick to dash off when they see us in their way. However, they come in many shades from light to dark brown and are found in many forms. They are also found all across the world except in Antarctica and Australia. Deer which are known to have a lifespan of about 11 to 12 years, are very versatile and live in just about any ecosystem from the wetlands, deciduous forests to mountains and the grasslands. Some are also known to populate close to human settlements and are not as shy as we may think.

There are about 47 species of deer known to man and some of these include the elk, reindeer, the pudu and the moose. They also differ in size as well with the smallest deer known to be the Southern pudu weighing about 20 lbs and measuring around 14 inches in height when fully grown. The largest living deer known to mankind is the moose which can grow up to 7 feet from hoof to shoulder and weigh some 1,800 lbs. However, some 11,000 years ago, it was not the moose that was the largest deer but the Irish deer or Irish elk that stood at about 7 feet at the shoulders with the largest antlers known weighing some 85 lbs and measuring about 12 ft from tip to tip. There is a theory that the Irish elk had such powerful antlers because female deer consistently bred with the deer bearing the largest antlers thereby leading them to have eventually such massive antlers.

With 47 species behind them, it is clear that the deer family can be very large. These animals which are known to run at great speed because of their thin, long legs, belong to the ruminant family of the Cervidae category and are recognized for their antlers, long bodies and necks, as well as slender legs and small tails. With the exception of the Caribou or Reindeer family, most male deer are known to bear antlers. In the Reindeer family, also known as the Caribou, female deer are seen with antlers as well. The other species worth nothing is the Chinese water deer which has no antlers. During mating season, most male deer may use their antlers to attract females but the Chinese water deer may rely on its long canine teeth as a source of attraction.

According to research, antlers are not horns but bony formations which grow from pedicels located on the frontal bone of the skull. Deer begin to grow their first set of antlers when they reach one year of age. It seems that the skin or tissue that grows at the top of the pedicel will cause antlers to form after some chemical reaction begins arising from the hormones in the deer. Scientists have indicated that if the growth tissue is removed and surgically implanted to another part of the deer’s body, the antler will also grow in that area! When antlers begin to form, they can be soft and spongy because they are just forming. That also means that the antlers bear a lot of nerves and blood vessels, and are covered by a hairy skin called a velvet. As the antlers grow and develop towards completion, the bone begins to form on the antlers causing them to harden. This causes the velvet to dry up and they will eventually fall off or get eaten by the buck.  Antlers are deciduous meaning they get shed after a time of use. Male deer will compete for the attention of the female deer during the breeding season and then shed their antlers thereafter.

The deer is known to be a social animal and will travel in groups called herds. On occasions, the males may have their own herd while the female may organize their own. However, most times, deer are watched by a leader who is usually a male. These animals are also active most of the day especially during sunrise and dusk where they will forage for food as a herd. These herbivores rely on plantation such as grass, leaves and plants for food. While they can live up to 12 years of age, many of these animals fall prey to hunting and predators. They are also easily killed by cars when they travel across roads hence their life span rests on other factors as well which tend to shorten their lives.

The female deer has a gestation period of 180 to 240 days depending on species when bearing her young. The Reindeer for instance has a gestation period of 222 days, the white-tailed deer has 201 days while the moose has a longer period of about 243 days. The larger the species, the longer the female will carry the baby in her womb. When she births, she can expect to have one to three young fawns at a time. The baby deer are usually weaned at 2-5 months of age.

Although the deer population seems healthy, there are a number of deer which are on the endangered list. These include the Calamian deer, hog deer, the Persian Fallow deer, sambar deer, key deer and the Chinanteco deer. Off recent years, there has been a lot of effort by conservationists to protect the key deer, a type of white-tailed deer native to Florida Keys, whose deaths are affected by road construction leading to heavy traffic. The more cars are placed on the road, the more the chances of killing the key deer.
