The age of a deer is determined by the size of the antlers which it sheds from time to time. When a male deer begins to have a new set of antlers, it starts off as being spongy and soft to touch. Over the months, it will eventually harden and turn bone white when the covering on the antlers are shed. Here, our life size sculpture of a standing buck possibly based on the red deer, adds years of service and comes beautifully detailed to make an impression. Deer Fun Facts
Did you know that the largest deer known lived about 11,000 years ago and had very big antlers which were branched? It is called the Irish Elk (Megaloceros) and stood at about 7 feet at the shoulder. Its antlers were also so huge that they had a spread of about 12 feet. Research has indicated that the Irish elk was able to run long distances and was able to live out in the open. Scientists named the animal “Irish Elk” because Ireland retained most of the fossil records of this deer which were found frequently in peat bogs and lake sediments. There is a theory that the Irish Elk went extinct because the antlers got too huge that it made it difficult for the animal to maneuver its way in the forest and to hold its head up high. |
