Deer Fun Facts
Like the cow, the deer too have a four-chambered stomach. When it first consumes food, it will store food in the first chamber (rumen) where bacteria will break down the food into a more digestible form. It is later regurgitated into the mouth as a cud where it is chewed and mixed with saliva. The food is then swallowed a second time bypassing the rumen into the second chamber known as the reticulum. Thereafter, it is passed into the third chamber, the omasum and then into the final stomach cavity called the abomasum. From the fourth stomach, the food will pass into the small intestine where nutrients are absorbed. This process in all allows the deer to convert the cellulose from the plant into sugar forms for easier digestion.
