The Lovable Truth about Dogs
Dogs, they say, are man’s best friends. And the truth is dogs are considered to be one of the most loyal animals known to mankind. Unlike their cousin, the wolves, dogs have been domesticated for centuries for shepherding and herding activities. Proof of their existence and early domestication comes from many archaeological paintings and stories made available over time. Quite obviously then, man has summed up quite well the value and reason for having dogs as pets. And so, when it comes down to having a pet these days, most people will begin their life with a dog finding a puppy to start with because they will tell you there is nothing like having man’s best friend grow with and around you.
And the truth is dogs stay loyal to their master. They never run away and have been known to engage in some of the most mind boggling feats when saving their owner’s lives. If that’s not enough, dogs are also known to cuddle and love their owners all their lives staying close as constant companions and when their owners are on extended travel visits out of the house. Some dogs are also known to stay close to their owners when they are trekking through the wilderness.
Dogs are also known to engage in search and rescue missions. Several breeds are trained on a regular basis by organizations involved in helping the blind and crippled to act as chaperones for owners with disability problems. These furry animals are also widely used by the military and the police in missions. Some of the dogs used by the military and police include German Shepherds, Alsatians, Dobermans and Rottweilers. These dogs ate specially trained to aid in forensics and to track criminals. Some are even employed in airports to uncover illegal activities like drug trafficking.
Types of Dogs:
There are many kinds of dogs employed by mankind to service the community. These include search and rescue mission dogs like the Saint Bernards and other canine dogs used to aid the crippled like the Golden Retrievers and Labradors. Saint Bernards were first employed by monks living in the mountainous regions of the Alps between Italy and Switzerland. Sometime in the early 18th century, monks living in the snowy and dangerous St. Bernard Pass, kept these dogs to help them during the event their monks went missing in bad snowstorms. The dogs were also known to dig out buried people trapped in snow and to lie on them so they had warmth. The monks used these dogs on a regular basis until recently when helicopters became widely used in the mountain areas.
Some dogs are also known as “police dogs”. Sometimes, they are known as the “canine” or “K-9” units and their purpose is to assist police and law enforcement in helping stop crime. Police dogs have been trained for many tasks and are used in airports and crowded public areas to search for drugs and sometimes, explosives. Some of these dogs are even used in crime sites to locate evidence. Many of these dogs are also capable of searching for lost people and apprehending criminals. Some of the breeds used for such purposes include the German Shepherds, Labrador Retrievers and Rottweilers.
There is also another kind of dog which is used in search and rescue (SAR) missions. Such dogs are used in the tracking of lost people who have trailed in the wilderness, in natural disasters and casualty disasters such as earthquakes, and of course, in locating lost people. Some of these search and rescue dogs may either use scent to track or rely on other materials to aid in tracking. Such dog breeds include larger dogs and hounds which are able to adapt to the terrain and these could include Saint Bernards, German Shepherds and Labradors. These dogs are known for their keen sense of smell, enhanced hearing and ability to track in the night. They also have an endurance level that help in the efforts needed to track missing and injured people. SAR dogs in general can be trained in land cadaver, water cadaver, air scenting, urn and wilderness tracking and trailing.
There is another kind of dog that is used in helping people with special disabilities. These are called service dogs and with special training, they can aid people with special disabilities like vision or hearing impairment. Most often, service dogs are used to help people with power or manual wheelchairs, have mental and physical disabilities including seizures and other health conditions like low blood sugar. These dogs are trained from young, and can help in many ways by helping to reach for things that are out of the way, by opening and closing doors, turning lights on and off and even help to get attention by barking until help arrives. Their help is invaluable and can extend in many ways including assisting ambulatory persons to walk. Most breeds which are used as service dogs include Golden Retrievers or Labrador Retrievers. They are identified by a jacket, backpack or harness. These dogs are trained to be reliable service dogs and entrusted to help people with special disabilities.
