Conservation of Wildlife Animals

The world is filled with life of all kinds. As man makes his way across the earth, he cannot help but know that alongside his ventures is the vast preponderance and existence of all forms of wildlife. Without the wildlife animals, our ecosystem will be in jeopardy. A decline in the tiger population will affect the viability of another species or the increased manifestation of the prey leading to a sometimes unfavorable effect on mankind. So, what does one mean when one speaks of the wildlife? Immediately, the human mind conjures a number of animals like the elephants, hippos, birdsand snakes. Indeed, there is a wide classification of the term wildlife and it refers to animals which cannot be domesticated. The term “wildlife” also includes botanical plants and fungi.

Wildlife can be found all across the continents and each continent may have its own category of wildlife. One example is China which is known for its panda, an animal that cannot be found in another part of the world. Wildlife can also be found in all sorts of habitat not usually inhabited by man like deserts, rainforests, grasslands and plains. Of course, wildlife can also exist in human habitats. Examples would include spiders, rats and even snakes. Domesticated animals like cats, dogs and rabbits are exempt from this classification.

There has been growing concern that insufficient conservation efforts have been done to save the wildlife and their population is dwindling. As such, a growing number of organizations and institutions are working with educational facilities to help stop the killing of wildlife. There is also a lot of poaching against wildlife animals like elephants and hippopotamuses for their tusks which has been causing harm to the population. Considerable efforts are being engaged to create means to sustain wildlife development.

There are a number of places where wildlife in the Americas can be appreciated. Some of the areas include the following:

The Great Lakes
The Great Lakes include the surrounding land and lakes of Michigan, Superior, Huron, Erie, and Ontario which together form the largest surface freshwater system in the world. These lakes collectively hold one fifth of the world’s surface freshwater and hold a number of fishes including the whitefish, trout, walleye and muskellunge. The Great Lakes is also home to the land animals such as the gray wolf, lynx, moose and bald eagle as well as millions of migratory birds like the waterfowl and common loon which see the Great Lakes as an important breeding and feeding ground. Conservation efforts are being steered off late to bring wildlife back to the Great Lakes due to harm caused by pollution, global warming and sulfide mining.

The Northern Forest
Made up of hardwood and boreal forests, the Northern Forest covers about 26 million acres and lies east of the Mississippi. It is known for its wildlife, exotic autumn foliage, outdoor recreation and vast forested areas. The diversity of ecosystems in this region has led to a number of wildlife species like the moose, white-tailed deer, black bear, pine marten, Canada lynx, the falcon and the bald eagle. There are about 2 million people who live in the Northern Forest area which is also a world supplier of hardwood trees.

The forest also maintains a number of bird habitats like the Bicknell's thrush, blackpoll warbler, Swainson's thrush, and yellow-rumped warbler found on its mountaintop. Chickadees, Canada warblers, pine grosbeak, purple finches, and spruce grouse are said to live in its conifer forests. Other birds like the common loon, American black duck, common goldeneye, and bald eagle are found in the lakes and ponds as well as the wetlands. Both the Hudson and Connecticut River valleys hold many migratory birds like the Atlantic brant and green-winged teal. The Northern Forest is currently facing many threats caused by timber development in areas close to cities like Boston and Portland. Climate changes are also affecting certain wildlife and trees in the region.

The wildlife is important to our sustenance and will continue to be a focal part of many conservation efforts across the United States and Canada.
