Many of our customers ask us if bronze is suitable for outdoor use and our answer to that is “most definitely!” Bronze is a versatile and powerful metal with superior tensile strength that has withstood time and is suitable for both indoor and outdoor décor. Many ancient bronze sculptures which exist today only highlight the proof that bronze has stood through time and is a reliable metal to use for outdoor use. So, what is the composition of bronze? What is it made of? Well, bronze is an alloy typically composed of about 90% copper and 10% tin. Since it has a lower melting point than pure copper, bronze can stay in the liquid form much longer when filling a mold. This then helps to shape the sculpture beautifully than would happen with a pure copper sculpture.
Perhaps, it must be regarded that the ancient Greeks and Romans were very astute in the creation of bronze sculptures and statuary. The artisans were capable of creating some of the finest sculptures in bronze and many images of their Gods, Goddesses, military and political heroes, athletes and the everyday man, woman and child were reproduced and adorned public sites like temples, libraries and sanctuaries of major cities. Their renowned creation and attention to detail, most of which was acquired through trial and error, has inspired much of the artwork of the modern era and many sculptures made today are created simply by learning the manner bronze was used in the ancient world.
There are a number of examples to proof that bronze sculptures have tested time. One of these sculptures includes the Fallen Warrior from Temple of Aphaia (c 480-470BC). This amazing sculpture captures the tragic persona and last breath of a dying hero from a temple on the Greek island of Aegina. Another bronze sculpture worthy of mention is the Pergamon altar (180-160BC). One look at this sculpture and you will realize the amount of emotions and sensationalist depth that this piece features. There’s just so much drama and passion illustrated by the figures, again made possible because of the ability to use bronze to deliver such a powerful message. Perhaps, you may have heard of the bronze sculpture that was found in the sea off Greece. It is a sculpture of the Greek God Zeus shown hurtling a thunderbolt. The ancient Greek artisan who made this sculpture was skilled in capturing the powerful might of the God as he is caught in one of his powerful display of emotions. Other sculptures which were created in later centuries like David by Donatello (1386-1466) were cast during the Renaissance period and stands as proof that bronze is here to stay and last.
Because of the growing popularity of bronze, many sculptures, figurines and bas reliefs are created to deliver the message to the audience of the emotions and personalities of the sculptures. Today, bronze sculptures and statues are made through the lost wax casting method. In this process, the sculptor begins with a large scale model of the sculpture made of water-based clay; for those of smaller figurines and statuettes, plasticine material may be used to create the form. A plaster mold is then made from the clay sculpture and sometimes, gel or rubber based mold casting may be produced in some situations stabilized by a plaster jacket of several layers. Once such molds are produced, the patron is contacted to see if further refinement is needed before the big work begins to create the bronze casting version. In some situations, a core can be cast in place if the statue is designed to be hollow.
Bronze is an investment. It may cost money to purchase bronze sculptures but they last a long time. Many of these pieces are suitable for use as cemetery sculptures or for making a statement as memorial markers to commemorate a loved one; they are also excellent choices for celebrating a win and sometimes, trophies can be created from bronze to mark such as event. On a separate note, some libraries and schools enjoy adorning their facilities with reading children sculptures to emphasize the importance of the reading habit. Whatever the reasons, bronze is here to stay and is a joy to have.
