Monkey 101: Monkey Facts You Could Know
People are often confused about apes and monkeys. Before we explore some monkey facts and what apes and monkeys are, let’s talk about what primates are. Primates include monkeys and apes, and together they belong to the category that covers mammals. That also means that humans share some characteristics with apes and monkeys since all three belong to the suborder of anthropoids. Primates are therefore mammals who possess but are not limited to the following characteristics:
- they have hair instead of fur
- they have fingernails not claws
- opposable thumbs
- have a higher level of intelligence
- depth perception meaning the ability for the eyes to focus on objects
- ability to grasp using the fingers and/or toes
- higher brain to body size ratio
As mentioned, people tend to confuse apes and monkeys placing them as one equal. That is not correct because chimpanzees, gibbons and gorillas do not belong to the monkey family but the ape family. There are a number of differences between apes and monkeys. Some of the characteristics of the apes which contrast with monkeys are:
- a higher life span favoring the apes
- a larger body size
- a larger brain to body size ratio
- do not have tails unlike monkeys
- a higher level of intelligence
Another common misconception is that chimpanzees are monkeys. The truth is they belong to the ape family and are not to be confused as monkeys. In fact, there are two categories of apes. They include the great apes and the lesser apes. Both categories are separated by size. The gibbons and siamangs of South East Asia belong to the lesser apes. The great apes consist of the gorillas, bonobos and the chimpanzees of Africa, as well as the orangutans of South East Asia.
Many sculptures are based on either monkeys or chimpanzees, and the way you would differentiate them is through the tail. Chimpanzees or chimps as they are popularly known as do not have tails. These apes are popularly characterized in many sculptures which include the three wise monkeys. As you shop the marketplace, you will find many sculptures that use chimpanzees to create accents for the home and garden. Some of them include sculptures we feature such as the reading monkey bookends and chimpanzee planter. So, what are chimpanzees and what’s so special about them?
Chimpanzees are great apes which live in the tropical rain forests of Africa residing in countries like Sudan, Cameroon, Nigeria and the Congo. These animals which have a life span of about 50 years in the wild have a black coat which develops some grayish tone after they turn twenty years or more. Chimps can grow to heights of about 3-5 ft and they travel mostly by knuckle walking. Generally, chimpanzees are considered to be the most social of all the great apes as they will choose to live in large communities of up to 120 individuals at a time. They will also groom each other as a way of calming and cultivating their relationship with their fellow mates. Chimpanzees maintain a leader for their group but it appears that each community will have their own sub-groups with a leader assigned. Hence, there can be several leaders in a chimpanzee community. They live mostly on fruits but will consume insects, birds and other small mammals. They make nests when sleeping and use tools to search for food sometimes hunting for termites with sticks they make to do the job. Many research projects have used chimpanzees to determine their intelligence and found that they have excellent memory retention which allows them to learn some simple English and react to specific sounds.
