Deer Fun Facts
The male deer begin to grow antlers after one year of age. When the antlers first begin, they are soft and spongy to the touch. Deer which live in temperate regions will find new antlers growing during early summer. As these antlers grow, they become covered by a thin layer of skin covered by short, fine hairs. This covering is called velvet and it provides the antlers with a plentiful source of blood until the antlers are fully grown in late summer. Once the antlers have reached their growth and hardened, the blood supply will stop causing the velvet to dry up. The buck will then rub off the velvet on trees and might even consume it. What lies beneath then are fresh antlers to use for the season. |
