Some Crane Facts: And Why Crane Gift Ideas Might Do Well

Have you ever wondered why cranes are oftentimes sold in pairs? When you visit a shopping site, you might see crane sculptures sold in sets of twos and you wonder why they are suggested as wedding or anniversary gifts? Well, there’s a reason. One of the best wedding and anniversary gifts you could send is a set of crane statues or sculptures because when you send such a gift, you are really in turn blessing the couple to be happy for life. It is a belief that cranes mate for life and do not change their mates. Hence, when you send a gift of the cranes, you are really honoring the couple to be together all their lives. It makes the couple happy to receive such a gift too!

So, what’s all the fascination with the cranes? What sort of birds are they? Cranes form part of the Gruidae family of birds and are one of the oldest migratory and social birds known in the world traveling some 200-300 miles in a day. They include some 15 species like the Sandhill Crane and the Crowned Crane which have lived since ancient times. Some people may mistake cranes for herons but cranes are generally tall and graceful birds characterized by their long, slim necks and legs. They walk gracefully with a certain stature and have mainly grey or white plumage sometimes with some chestnut colors. The Sandhill crane for instance is very tall standing at about 3-4 feet with a wingspan of about 7 feet. The more widely distributed of the cranes is the common crane which can be found all over from Western Europe to Alaska and Eastern Siberia.

Crane Habitat

Cranes can be found all over the world except in the Antarctica and South America with most of the crane species being found in Asia. But off late, the population of cranes has been dwindling due to habitat loss. These are birds which prefer wide open areas and grassy wetlands, populating shallow lakes and marshes. Looking at them is a wonderful experience because they walk so gracefully and seem collected as they gather seeds and insects with their long beaks. They also communicate with their fellow cranes through very strong vocalizations and are social birds which prefer community living.

Crane Diet

Cranes also adapt according to the seasons and will change their diet accordingly. During late summer and fall, they will eat seeds and berries as well as grains. In winter, they might eat fish, small amphibians and rodents. They are omnivorous and will subsist on anything that works for them.

Cranes Mate for Life

During the mating season, the cranes will engage in a loud courtship display and will emit a number of vocalizations intended to attract their mates. The sounds of their courtship calls are very loud like trumpets being sounded almost miles away. Both male and female cranes will stretch their necks and open their wings bobbing up and down as they call each other. These birds are known to mate for life and will construct their nests made of mud and vegetation in the marshy regions where they inhabit. They will lay two eggs which will go through an incubation period of some 30 days. Both cranes will dote on their baby chicks until they grow.

Did you know Sandhill cranes are known to consider the Platte River Valley as one of their most important stopovers in their migration path? The river is known to be a perfect resting spot for the cranes because of the abundance of food provided by the surrounding farmlands and the wet meadows. Stopping by the valley helps the cranes recoup their lost energy so that they do not arrive at their destination weak and tired. Also, there is a chance that their destination may not provide the rich source of food they need.

Cranes travel very far and high, so high that they have also been seen flying over Mount Everest! They also depend on thermals and tail winds to take them through their journey. These birds fly very gracefully propelling themselves into the air as they spread their very large wings apart.

Cranes are celebrated all over the world. In Colorado, there is a festival called the Monte Vista Crane Festival which invites people to watch thousands of cranes and other migratory birds like the ducks and geese flying against a backdrop of a mountain landscape. In many cultures, cranes are celebrated all across the world and carry symbolic meanings. Native American cultures for instance carry the cranes as a totem and associate them with good luck. Native American fishermen would consider it a good luck if they saw a crane while fishing. In Japan, the crane is often featured because it symbolizes loyalty and honor.

It is a wonderful idea to sometimes present a crane as a way of extending goodwill to your recipient.
