Crane Facts

Did you know that the Mississippi, Cuban and Florida sandhill cranes are listed as endangered? They are non-migratory birds with both the Mississippi and Florida sandhill cranes being listed as rare in the 1968 list of Rare and Endangered Wildlife of the United States. Of the three species, the Mississippi sandhill cranes (Grus canadensis pulla) have a recorded population of only about 110 with breeding pairs of about 20-25. It is believed that they are affected because of habitat loss which covers the wet pine savanna where they live. After World War II, the wet pine savanna was converted to pine plantations and this move was believed to have affected the Mississippi sandhill cranes.
