In 1887, a member of the university's building committee for the Rockefeller Hall, placed the head of a real brown bear above the arch that was the central feature of the trophy room. The rationale behind celebrating the bear as mascot lay in the fact that the bear is good-natured and clean. Many schools also celebrate the bear as mascot and purchase bronze bear statues to make that impression. Fact is we are doing a wonderful bronze bear statue sale here at MyGardenGifts.com and we invite you to discover the world of bears with us.

So, what are bears? We know there are 8 species of bears – the spectacled bear, sun bear, sloth bear, polar bear, panda bear, American black bear, Asiatic black bear and brown bear. The grizzly bear which comes from the brown bear family are fast facing extinction if we do not do something about protecting their population. Generally, bears are largely omnivorous mammals which can be found living in forests, mountains, tundra, deserts and grassy areas all over the world. They have a snout, have stocky fur-covered bodies and move with short legs. A baby bear that was just born is said to be very small and is both blind and deaf. They are raised in protective dens and nurtured till they grow stronger and heavier. Certainly, they do not stay helpless for long!

Species of Bears

Asiatic black bears are easily spotted because of their distinctive white patch on their chests which is said to be V-shaped. They are nocturnal creatures which come out only at night to hunt. Most of their sleeping time happens in the day.

Sloth bears have the same patches as the Asiatic black bears as well as light colored muzzles. They have extremely long noses which allow them to suck termites out of their nests which they then consume.

Spectacled bears get their name because of the markings around their eyes which looks like spectacles.

Brown bears come in many colors from light cream to a blackish tone. They are fierce carnivores which normally hunt alone unless they are fishing when a number of bears could join together. These bears are extremely aggressive and can attack animals which are much larger than them like the elk and moose. They spend almost half their lives in hibernation. Female brown bears will give birth during the winter months but will lose almost half of their weight in the process.

The American black bears may be black but there are some types which are chocolate and cinnamon brown colors. These bears have a healthy population and are known to be curious animals. They are also known to hibernate for long period sleeping for as many as 7 months without eating or drinking. A young black bear will learn most of its hunting skills and guidance from its mother cub.

Pandas are of course recognizable because of their black and white fur. They are also a rare species of bear and are usually found in the wet and cool bamboo forests of Asia. They spend about 12 hours a day eating bamboo.

Despite their somewhat calm and collected look, polar bears can be extremely aggressive and carnivorous often feasting on baby seals. Adults grow to about 5 feet in length and can weigh up to 1,200 lbs. They have white fur and are very large. They are usually found in the Arctic.

The smallest species of bear is the sun bear which is said to measure about 4-5 feet in length and weigh about 60-150 lbs. Their babies weigh only a tender 7-12 ounces and are usually transported by their mother in her mouth or paws as she walks. Sun bears have a crescent shape marking on their chests. They also have no hair and are unable to smell or hear at birth.

Endangered Bears List

According to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), six of the eight bear species except for brown bears and the American black bears, are in the endangered or vulnerable list. The most endangered bear is the giant panda which is believed to have only about 1,000 to 2,000 living in the wild today. Polar bears are also facing extinction with about 25,000 estimated living today.

There bear will always fascinate us. In fact, there are many cultures across the world which celebrate bears and even worship them. In Japan, the Ainu people respect the bear as their “kamui” or head of the God. When their kamui visits, it is believed that the God would wear claws and fur. The bear is also featured on many designs in native American culture which believe the bear symbolizes great strength and wisdom. The Pueblo tribe for instance considers the bear as one of their six directional guardians. The bear is also worshipped in Celtic cultures as well as by the Nivkh people of eastern Russia.

As such, bears will always find a place in our lives. We adore them and realize they form part of the eco-system of our planet. We should do our part in educating the public about them and protecting our wildlife. Why not celebrate bears by including some life size bear sculptures as part of the landscape of a park or garden? If you are looking for tabletop bear sculptures, you might like to consider bear bookends to adorn the shelves. Bears are also known to be used as school mascots, and will make wonderful additions to mark the garden or an entry way.

Please email us for more information on our bear statues and sculptures for the home or garden.
