The IUCN considers that brown bears are the least threatened species of the bears although the grizzly bear subspecies is listed as threatened by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Generally classified as one of the larger of the brown bear species, grizzly bears are known to be affected because of habitat loss caused by logging, development, and mining. Humans are also said to affect their population numbers because when threatened, most people would fire a gun and kill them. This usually happens when grizzly bears attack livestock and garbage. In Canada however, people are allowed to hunt grizzlies for trophy. In the U.S., grizzlies are a protected species but are shot sometimes because they are mistaken for black bears which are not protected. |
