Deer Fun Facts

Did you know that the antlers are bone white when the velvet is first rubbed off the antlers? As soon as the antlers began to harden, the bucks will begin a process called rubbing to remove the velvet covering on their antlers. This exposes their bone white antlers which soon become stained with varying shades of brown over time. This occurs because bucks may move through forests causing the antlers to get caught on trees and shrubs. When this happens, plant compounds will usually stain the bone white antlers. Over time, this reacts through a process called oxidation leading to the antlers having different shades of brown.
