Did you know that deer rub their velvet off the trees as a way of marking their territory?
Male deer or bucks will scrape off the velvet from their antlers as soon as they become hard by rubbing them against young trees and shrubs. This act is usually done by a few dominant bucks to signal their readiness to breed and to mark out their territory. As the buck scrapes off the velvet, it is also leaving its scent on the trees. This scent comes from the deer’s forehead skin glands and this process sets their position in the social order. Because the male deer that did the rub is usually an older male, it send a signal to the female deer and the young male deer that authority is being established and they should comply with it. |
