If you are looking to keep a monkey as a pet, then maybe you might like to read the following monkey facts and some general beliefs about monkeys.

Monkey God

One of the most popular gods in Hinduism is Hanuman who is known to be a Monkey God. Based on the reincarnation of Shiva, his heroic exploits are told in the story of the Ramayana and the Mahabharata, epic stories of the Hindu religion. Hindus pray to Hanuman and may chant his name to seek intervention from Heaven. In China, the Monkey God Festival continues to be celebrated. The monkey god is Sun Wu Kong. He is king of the monkeys and is known to be a trickster. Japan’s love for the monkey is tied to Shinto-Buddhism with the earliest depiction known to be The Wise Monkeys which reside in the Tosho-gu shrine in Nikko, Japan. Japanese believe the monkey protects against demons and is a patron of fertility, safe childbirths and a happy marriage.

Monkey Attack

Most of us consider monkeys to be cute and funny but many do not realize that monkeys can suddenly get aggressive and violent. They are also known to be strong. Stories of monkeys attacking and killing humans are told worldwide and only provide proof that caution needs to be exercised when one is near a monkey. Monkeys can get unpredictable and cause harm. In August 2016, a woman opened her RV trailer door and let out a monkey which ran out and attacked a Walmart employee in Lancaster, Ohio. Although the story had its happy ending with no charges pressed against the woman, it shows the animal to be unpredictable and given to sudden moods.

Monkey Trouble

Did you know that Monkey Trouble is about a little girl who is eager to have a pet and can’t have one? One day, she meets and befriends a monkey and has some hilarious fun with it. The movie is comedy-based and stars Thora Birch. It was directed by Franco Amurri.

Monkey Zodiac

Did you know that the Chinese have chosen the monkey as part of their zodiac calendar? The monkey is the ninth in the 12-year cycle of the Chinese zodiac calendar. Those born in the years of 1992, 2004 and 2016 are said to be born in the year of the monkey. The next Year of the Monkey will be in 2028. Those born in the year of the monkey are known to be intelligent and are capable of excelling in their career. They will also be wealthy, are lively individuals and quick-witted. The downside is such people tend to be hot-tempered and have a habit of looking down at another.

Monkey Paw

The Monkey’s Paw is based on a short supernatural story written in 1902 by author W.W. Jacobs where three wishes are granted to an owner of a monkey paw. As he seeks out each wish, he finds that it all comes at a great and horrible price. The story reminds us to be careful about what we wish for and continues to be a popular story told till this day. However, as to the granting of the wishes, it is mostly likely that this story is based on an old superstition.

Monkey Rum

Did you know that the host of National Geographic's Chug and Spike's Three Sheets, Zane Lamprey, created a drink called Monkey Rum? While the drink has no relationship with monkeys, it is sold in distinctive barrel shaped bottles. According to reports, the rum is distilled in Trinidad, aged in American bourbon barrels called Monkey Rum, and are then flavored with natural ingredients. The final product is a coconut and spiced rum.
