Planning Your Water Feature for your Garden
American homeowners enjoy the sound and sight of water. There is something truly calming and magical about hearing water and watching it trail down and cascade on rocks and stones. Sometimes, having a water feature like a fountain or pond right by a busy street can do a lot in calming the nerves taking your mind away from the sounds of rude traffic. So, it isn’t surprising why most homeowners try to accommodate at least a small water feature in their yard.
The first thing to do when planning your pond or pool is to investigate a good location. If you are someone who likes water lilies, choose a location that gets at least four hours of direct sunlight a day. Ideally, it should be a location that is away from the trees so that the leaves will not dirty your pond and cause a hazard to fishes. Rotting leaves from trees and shrubs like the holly, laurel, rhododendron, poplar, willow and horse chestnut can be toxic to fishes. The other consideration you would make in having a water feature is to also be able to enjoy the sight of it as often as you can. You want to be able to step out into your garden and be able to have a visual view of your fountain or pond almost immediately.
When planning your water feature, you must set up your pond close to an electrical source. All pond equipment which runs on electricity must be grounded with ground-fault circuit interrupters. Your next consideration would be to decide on the size, shape and style of your pond or pool. For instance, you might consider a free form or geometric design, formal or informal type, and one that is either naturalistic or stylized.
The ideal pond should have a water surface of at least 40 square feet with a minimum depth of at least 18 inches. Also include a shelf below the water surface if you plan to grow marginal plants like the yellow flag (Iris psuedacorus) that need their crowns under water. A square yard of water surface can accommodate for instance, one water lily, one Japanese arrowhead, one pennywort and some grass. Also, try to balance the number of fish and plants for your garden pond and refrain from growing sensitive fish like koi and goldfish if you are choosing to invest in a water tub garden as these varieties of fishes will not survive. The reason is the water in tub garden can get hot since it holds a smaller capacity of water. |
