Do you know that the extinct Irish deer or Irish elk had the largest antlers among the deer species spanning about 6 ft from end to end? While it is said that these species of deer may not have fought with other males using their antlers, they most likely used their large antlers to woo female deer. The attraction for large antlers may have caused female Irish deer to seek males with very large antlers so that when they mated, the gene for the large antlers simply got passed on until the male Irish deer received extremely large antlers which were not only widely stretched and branched but became so heavy the animal had trouble holding their head up.
