Deer Fun Facts
Did you know that a deer’s antlers are deciduous? This means that the antlers do not stay permanently on them. Male deer will carry their antlers through the fall and shed them between late December and early March. During this time, the buck will experience hormonal changes that cause the bone at the tip of the pedicel to weaken. The pedicel is where the antlers will develop. When it starts becoming weak, the antler will separate and fall off from the pedicel. Once they fall, they become a source of interest for small critters like mice, rats, squirrels and porcupines. These small critters will gnaw at the antlers for their mineral content like calcium and phosphorus. Additionally, the gnawing of the antlers help sharpen the teeth of these critters.
