Although sea turtles are seen to have a cultural and spiritual importance, there are still many societies which consume their meat and eggs. In Central America and Asia, sea turtles are considered a food source. Sometimes, consuming them is seen as ensuring a long life. Because they are so prized, there is a demand for them and during the nesting season, hunters will comb the beaches looking for nesting females which only come out at night to lay their eggs. These hunters will wait until the female turtle has laid all her eggs and then kill her for her meat. After that, the hunters will take both the eggs and meat to be sold. |
