Artificial lighting by the beaches affects the life cycle of the sea turtles which use the beaches to lay their eggs. Every year, mother sea turtles are intimidated by the sight of street lamps and lights from houses and condominiums located by the beaches. If she does lay her eggs on beaches, the baby sea turtles will suffer with the artificial light as well. Hatchlings tend to become disoriented and will wander inland instead of making their way to the sea. Naturally, they will get lost and become dehydrated or will fall prey to natural predators like dogs and raccoons. Sometimes, they might get run over by cars. Although coastal communities have passed laws to reduce the amount of artificial lighting at night, this has not done enough to nurture the sea turtles.
