Fun Pig Facts
In Greek mythology, Meleager was credited for killing one of the most ferocious boars on the countryside of Calydon which was overseen under the rule of King Oeneus, the ancient ruler of Calydon. It was also said that while Meleager was the one to kill the boar, it was Atalanta, his lover who first wounded the boar. Meleager then awarded his lover the boar’s hide since she was the one who had first struck the boar. This angered his uncles and brothers who were also with him on the hunting expedition. According to legend, Meleager killed his uncle and brothers for insulting his lover thereby angering his mother. The news of her son’s and brothers’ deaths angered Meleager’s mother. At the time of his birth, his mother Althaea has protected him when fate revealed that he would be ensured immortality if a certain piece of wood from the family could be preserved for eternity. However, upon learning that her son had killed his brothers and uncle, Althaea placed the protected wood in the fire and killed her son.
