Did you know that about 90% of all sea turtle nesting happens in the coastal areas of Florida? We should reduce the amount of artificial lighting found near beaches and turn it down in the late hours of the night to allow nesting sea turtles looking to lay their eggs on beaches. This will help nesting turtles to find the safe spots for their eggs thereby allowing their hatchlings to be safely guided by the moonlight back to the sea. Although many coastal communities have passed ordinances to reduce the amount of light during the turtle nesting season, these laws are not always observed. Coastal communities can help by many ways including turning off lights on nesting beaches, using low-pressure sodium-vapor lighting (LPS), using turtle safe lighting and ensuring the lighting from the back of their houses do not shine on to the beach. The turtle safe lighting for instance uses red lights which emit a very narrow portion of the visible light spectrum. This is considered to be less intrusive to the mother turtle and her baby hatchlings.
