Turtle Facts
Sea turtles and their babies face predation all the time, falling prey to natural predators in the sea like sharks. However, mankind has been promoting the predation by not taking care of the environment. For instance, when we leave trash near the shore, it invites animals like raccoons, coyotes, birds and dogs. These animals will eventually be able to find the nests of the sea turtles and eat their eggs. This in turn poses a serious threat to the survival of sea turtles as more hatchlings are caught and eaten than should otherwise happen with natural predation. Some communities allow their dogs to run loose and when left unattended, these dogs will dig up the sea turtle nests and expose them to other predators. Statistics reveal that one in 10,000 sea turtles will reach adulthood. Hence, it is important that we preserve the nests as astutely as possible to give sea turtles a chance to live on this planet as well. |
