Saint Teresa de Avila was a prominent Carmelite nun who was born in Salamanca, Spain in 1515. She was a mystic who was known to have written many works one of which explained the ascent of the soul in four stages. She also believed in the complete surrender and devotion to God, and was known to be in ecstacy many times and especially so during her early years of illness. In all, Saint Teresa is considered the patron saint of Spain and has contributed to the Catholic faith offering insights into spiritual exercise and elevation of the soul towards the plane of God through mentral prayer.
