Saint Francis of Assisi, the Patron Saint of Animals, was groomed for his father's business and known to be a soldier. It was during his captivity as a prisoner of war that he received a message from Christ asking him to abandon his worldly life and receive himself into the work of God. Saint Francis took the Gospels as the rule of his life and was noted for his Franciscan attire. In 1209, he founded the Franciscans based on one of Jesus' creed statements - "Leave all and follow me." Throughout his life, he had devoted himself to complete simplicity and earned a great respect among humankind for his kindness, his Gospels and the love of Christ.
