Elephant Facts

Did you know that an elephant can go through six sets of molars in its lifetime? At any typical point of its life, an elephant will have four molars in each jaw. These molars are designed for grinding. When it reaches adulthood, a single molar can grow to about 10-12 inches long and weigh about 8 lbs. The sixth set of molars usually form when the elephant reaches its forties and will last till it dies. When these molars become smooth because of constant use, the elephant will have difficulty chewing and processing food. This in turn affects the overall health of the elephant.
