The United States which oversees at least six of the seven species of the sea and marine turtles known to mankind, have engaged in a number of bilateral and international agreements protecting sea and marine turtles. One of the international agreement includes CITES and efforts are made to find all ways possible to protect sea turtles from being poached and falling prey to human activities through the destruction of nesting and feeding habitats. Efforts are also underway to educate commercial and recreational fisheries to be mindful of catching turtles in their nets as this can hurt and drown the turtles. Sea turtles are also affected when they become entangled in marine debris and are hit by ships and vessels.
