Crane Facts
Although the ancient Greeks may view the cranes as a symbol of love and happiness, there is a myth that the crane is also the guide for the Greek God of the underworld, Hades. Sometimes, the bird is also seen as an omen and many stories are told about it. One ancient story includes the mythical story of Ibycus and the Cranes (about 550 BCE). Ibycus was an ancient Greek poet who was said to have been captured by bandits. At the time he was being murdered, Ibycus saw cranes flying over him and declared that the cranes would be his avengers. One day, as the bandits were moving through the city, they saw some flying cranes and one of the bandits shouted out that the cranes were the avengers of Ibycus. Shortly thereafter, the bandits were caught and punished because they had just revealed their crimes to the public.
