Golf Fun Facts:
Do you know that America’s first 18-hole golf course was constructed on a 60-acre farm in Belmont, just south of Ogden Avenue in Downer’s Grove? The farm was owned by A. Haddow Smith, a golfing enthusiast who gave it up for the golf course. Known today as the Chicago Golf Club, it is located in Wheaton, Illinois and is one of the five clubs which founded the United States Golf Association in 1894. The golf course was constructed by businessman Charles Blair McDonald who brought golf to Chicago after having learned the sport from his grandfather while attending college in St. Andrews, Scotland. The Downer’s Grove Golf Course is now a 9-hole golf course.
