While sea turtles may face threats from their natural environment, the threats reduce as the sea turtles grow. Most of the threats may come from sharks which bite off flippers and attack sea turtles. However, more threats are faced as the sea turtle nests on land. Predators like dogs and skunks as well as raccoons oftentimes feast on sea turtle eggs. Sometimes, dogs will attack sea turtles as they lay their eggs. One wildlife organization that has been helping protect sea turtles is Hobe Sound National Wildlife Refuge which is located in Martin County, Florida. Their work has led to the reduction of predators such as raccoons, skunks and even dogs and cats which prey on the nests of sea turtles. As a result of their work, hatchlings from sea turtles like the loggerhead, leatherback and green are able to find their way to the sea. Before work began in 1997, more than 95% of all turtle hatchlings were lost to dogs and other invasive species. |
