Group of 100, an environmental organization created to save marine life like sea turtles have launched several campaigns to educate residents in Mexico City that eating turtle eggs will not improve their reproductive life and make them “macho”. The environmentalists and government officials have informed the public that it is important to protect the sea turtles and they will not hesitate to toss offenders in jail if they have to. The move to protect these species is important because seven species of sea turtles use the Mexican beaches every year to lay their eggs. Some of the turtles are known to leave as many as 100 eggs in the holes they dig. As a result of the need to protect the turtles, Mexico passed a law in the 1990s to prohibit turtle hunting and stealing the eggs. Violators will also be jailed for 9 years if found to be guilty. |
