Benefits of Setting Up a Bog Garden by the Pond:

As you plan for your garden pond, you will of course be looking to create a character for your pond. One of the ways you might enhance the appeal of your garden pond may include the use of a fountain statue like a frog fountain spitter or even a crane spitter to capture a whimsical interest for your pond. There are so many fountain statues you can consider for your garden pond from the classical to the contemporary or something whimsical shaped in the form of an animal or a bird. It all depends on your personal preference and what pleases your eye.

However, as you plan your garden pond to include unique fountain spitters and sculptures around it from turtles to frogs to even birds like herons and cranes, why not also consider creating a bog garden in the process? A bog garden can be created at the edge of an informal pond and can include a number of plants which require humus-rich soil which never completely dries out. Some of the plants could include sweet flag (acorus calamus), water canna (canna cultivars), meadowsweet (filipendula), daylily (hemerocallis cultivars), Japanese iris (iris ensata), Siberian iris (iris sibirica), blue flag (iris versicolor) and other plants like arrowhead (sagittaria latifolia).

A bog garden is a delightful consideration to set beside a garden pond and forms a nice transition between the water garden and the dry land. The soil for the bog garden will also never remain waterlogged because of the nature of the soil. If your land isn’t suitable for setting up such a garden, you can consider excavating it and then lining the hole with heavy plastic. Consider digging about 12-18 inches. Ensure that the plastic has about a 0.5 inch drainage hole about every 2-3 feet. Then add a layer of lime-free grit or gravel and refilled with good quality loam. Set about stones and pebbles to hide the edge of the plastic and water your bog garden as needed to keep the soil moist and especially so during long periods of hot, dry weather.
