The Enchanting Herons
Many people are intrigued by the beauty of the herons and often mistake these long-legged birds as “cranes”. Like the cranes, the herons are notably characterized with long legs and necks. The one thing that differentiates both of them is the neck. When the heron flies, it is said it retracts its neck into an S-shape but the crane stretches its neck outwards. Herons are beautiful coastal birds which are known to come in many sizes, the smallest being the Little Bittern and the largest being the Goliath Heron. It is said that there was even a larger heron that lived in ancient Egypt some five thousand years ago. Herons are generally private birds and when it comes down to their mating season, they demand the privacy intensely. As such, people need to be more aware of leaving these birds to their personal time lest they abandon their nests and the babies in fear!
Herons are migratory like the cranes and are highly social. They are one of the popular coastal wading birds known around next to cranes sometimes making their visibility felt along the oceans and even inland ponds. Their tall regal posture and definitive character makes them very colorful and enchanting birds, a beautiful sight for the American coastal regions. There are many types of herons known to man but perhaps the most largest and widespread of the lot here in the US include the Great Blue Heron which can reach up to 50" in height.
Many cultures celebrate the herons. Culturally, herons carry much symbolic meaning in many cultures, east and west. The Celtic people for instance see the heron as a symbol of patience and solitude. Hence it isn't surprising that Celts use the herons on their wedding bands since they mate for life. In the ancient Egyptian culture, the gray heron or the Goliath heron may have inspired the creation of Bennu, known as the sacred bird of the Heliopolis which was the site for the first known sun temple in ancient Egypt. The ancient Greeks however saw the heron as the Phoenix but eventually developed their own versions of how this bird could look. The Greeks recreated the ancient Egyptians' view of the Bennu to include a bird known as the Phoenix which grew to take the form of the eagle or peacock. It was known to have such a powerful voice and on one occasion evoked the interest of the Greek God of the Sun, Helios. Native Americans looked upon the herons as curious birds which garnered much wisdom and knowledge and seeing a heron before a hunting expedition signaled a good hunt ahead.
Our catalog on heron statues and sculptures features a range of garden and indoor heron statues from the large heron on base to bronze heron sculptures which are large to life size in size. Since herons, like the cranes, are known to mate for life, they will make wonderful gift ideas for a wedding or anniversary or even on Valentine's Day. |
