Elephant Facts

Elephants are very social animals and live in large groups. Young elephants are raised in a herd and are led by the oldest female elephant often recognized as the matriarch. She will provide them guidance while they are young calves and help them live in the herd. The herd is usually composed of female elephants which include a large family network of sisters, aunts and cousins, a relationship which endures for many, many years. Young male elephants usually stay with the herd till it reaches 14 years and would then roam in isolation.
