The Friendly American Bulldog: A Dog Everyone Loves

Ever seen a bulldog? The bulldog is a popular breed dog known for its characteristic distinct features and typical colors of fawn, brindle, white and red. It has a wide head and heavy, thick-set shoulders with a short muzzle, and has thick folds of skin on its face notably around the brow and much of the areas where its eyes are located. When you look at a bulldog, you might also notice its drooping lips, upturned jaw and the hanging skin under its neck. One of the most popular dogs in the United States and officially recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1886, the bulldog comes with many names and breed types. Among them include the American Bulldog, the French Bulldog and the Old English Bulldog. Records reveal that although the Old English Bulldog is now extinct, it was known to travel at great speeds as compared to the average bulldog.

Many American homeowners treasure the bulldog for its strength and kind disposition even though these dogs can be heavy and loud snorers. Although it may appear intimidating to some, the bulldog is really a kind and friendly dog making it one of the most revered family dogs as well. Many rear this dog because of its strong and protective relationship with children. The bulldog is also known to tolerate other kinds of pets as well. However, it is said that bulldogs begin to show signs of aging sometime after its fifth or sixth year. It is also quite susceptible to heart diseases and cancer. This is the reason why bulldogs are expected to undergo regular exercises. Without a proper exercise and diet, this breed can suffer from heart and lung diseases use to overweight. As it begins to grow heavier with neglect, bulldogs can also suffer from joint problems. The other issue which affects bulldogs includes the need to constantly keep the dog from possible heatstroke. Bulldogs are known to suffer if they are not kept in the shade and given enough water.

Because of their popularity, bulldogs are kept as mascots for schools and many organizations. It is also said to be a mascot of the United States Marine Corps and many universities across the United States. College footballs also adopt this dog as one of its mascots possibly because of its tenacity and vigor. One of the known factors that favor the use of the bulldogs as a mascot is because of its loyalty and ability to get along with people and other animals. It is little wonder then why these dogs will continue to be favored by the American audience. Because of their huge popularity, many organizations and schools keep statues of bulldogs or illustrate their face and character on logos and school or army and military wear.
