Turtle Facts:
One of the problems sea turtles are facing is caused by beach erosion. Although beach erosion can be handled by replacing the lost sand, sometimes the quality of sand used is not the same as the sand that was originally in place. This poses a problem because the replacement sand may not be the right texture which would allow sea turtles to dig their pits to lay eggs. This could also cause the sea turtles to explore less favorable nesting sites which could harm their hatchlings. Some scientists have reasoned that authorities do not realize that topping lost beach sand should not happen during the nesting seasons. When you top sand on existing nests, it may prevent the hatchlings from finding their way out as they are too buried in the soil.
