Turtle Facts:
Studies by the NOAA Fisheries Pascagoula Laboratory and the NOAA Fisheries Miami Laboratory have shown that when fisheries used the larger circle hooks instead of the traditional J-hooks and squid bait, the number of leatherback and loggerhead turtles which were caught in the long lines could be reduced by 65% and 95%. As a result, the NOAA Fisheries now requires the use of these hooks for long line fishing in the Atlantic and Pacific waters. Fisheries are also expected to carry special equipment and engage handling policies that would allow sea turtles which are accidentally caught in long lines, to be safely released into the sea.
